05/11/13: How Yoga Has Affected My Life

Thank you to Debbie for supplying our latest blog piece...

I have been practising Yoga for 6 years. I started doing some Hatha Yoga in May 2007. I was feeling fat and unfit and and wanted to regain suppleness and fitness. I did this for 2 years until the teacher left. I then tried an Ashtanga class. At first I hated it, it was so fast pace, I wanted to run away and never go again!! - but I did!! I went back each week until I loved it! I then started a Mysore self practice and also discovered Tara's wonderful Jivamukti class which I love, and go to on a Tuesday evening at Cavendish school.

Yoga has had a very positive affect on my life. I was born with a curvature of the spine. This has not caused me pain and isn't very noticeable, but it has meant that throughout my life all my pairs of trousers have had to be shortened 2 inches more on the left leg than the right leg. Since starting Yoga I have gradually noticed the difference reducing until I no longer need to take up the left leg more than the right and can buy trousers from the shop ready to wear! This is because Yoga is such symmetrical and equally balanced method of exercise, and works the core muscles too.

I used to be a Gymnast when I was in my teens, causing a lot of wear and tear on my right hip joint, which has resulted in Osteoarthritis. This is because I used to land on my right leg all the time. Yoga really helps to keep me supply and flexible. I think if I didn't do Yoga regularly I would be in a lot more pain from my Arthritis. My G.P says keeping moving is the best thing to do for Arthritis and Yoga is an excellent way to do this.

I have also been on some great social weekend Yoga breaks to The Lake District and Snowdonia which have introduced me to lots of new friends and have been rewarding and fantastic fun.
